Corinne at Slay At Home Mum is an expert in all things cleaning and organisation, regularly sharing her hacks on social media.

The hack “deodorises” the fibres and requires zero scrubbing[/caption]

Her mattress cleaning routine, which costs just 20p to execute, requires minimal effort.

She mixes bicarbonate of soda, also known as baking soda, with ten drops of an essential oil together before sprinkling it over her mattresses.

Corinne leaves the powdery solution to sit for an hour before hoovering it up.

The thought process behind the hack is that the bicarbonate of soda  absorbs any moisture and odours lurking in your mattress’ fibres.

The essential oils create an aroma that will keep circulating throughout the room for a few days afterwards.

According to Corinne, the bicarbonate of sofa “deodorises” your mattress, while the hoovering will suck up any rogue crumbs and dust.

Sophie Hinchcliffe, or Mrs Hinch as we know her, popularised the hack on Instagram in 2022.

After stripping the bed, she shared a video sprinkling bicarbonate of soda over her mattress and leaving it for an hour, just how Corinne does.

She then vacuumed up the powder using a handheld vacuum on the cold setting.

The hack is particularly handy for cleaning up any accidents on the mattress – like your child wetting the bed or a spilt drink.

Sweat, stains, dirt, and grime build up on your mattress, so making sure it’s fresh and clean is a must for a good snooze.

“Mattresses can harbour dust mites, dead skin, dirt, and other debris, which means they need to be cleaned regularly,” according to the pros at Architectural Digest.

“Particularly if you suffer from allergies, have pets, or are just an avid midnight snacker.”

How often should I clean my mattress?

You might be shocked to hear it, but experts recommend deep cleaning your mattress every few months.

If this doesn’t fit into your busy schedule, try and do it at least three times a year.

Even if you vacuum the mattress every few times that you change your bedding, this should help keep it clean.

Any spills or stains should be disinfected and removed with appropriate products.
