Late Late Show host Patrick Kielty to receive major award alongside former Irish president

RTE star Patrick Kielty is set to receive a major award this summer alongside a former Irish president.

The Late Late Show host will be given an honorary doctorate from Ulster University alongside Mary Robinson.

Both Kielty and Ms Robinson are amongst the seven people set to receive the top honour from Ulster University.

The honorary doctorates will be given out during the summer graduation’s which will take place from July 1 to 9 in Belfast, Coleraine and Derry.

Speaking on the honorary awards, Ulster University Vice Chancellor, Professor Paul Bartholomew said: “It is a joy to celebrate the work of those inspirational and acclaimed local faces already making a global impact, and we are thrilled to bestow these honorary doctorates.

“These individuals are leaders in their fields and demonstrate great talent, creativity and integrity.”

Ms Robinson has already been awarded honorary doctorates by Brown University, University of Cambridge, University of Liverpool and Lisbon Nova University, as well as the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009.

Kielty studied Psychology at Queen’s University Belfast from 1989 to 1992.

The 53-year-old began his entertainment career more than three decades ago and took helm of RTE’s flagship The Late Late show in September 2023.

The popular presenter’s wife Cat Deeley hosts British breakfast show, This Morning and she recently gave an insight into the couple’s hectic schedule.

In a segment on the breakfast show, Cat and her co-host Ben Sheppard were speaking to a married couple who told how they sleep in separate bedrooms.

The 47-year-old then revealed that herself and her Late Late Show hubby, Patrick, also sleep in separate bedrooms.

Speaking on the show, the host said: “It’s one of those things that because of our schedule here, from Monday to Thursday I sleep in the guest bedroom.

“And the rest of the time I’m back because otherwise I get up at 5am and I want to fall asleep earlier.”

The popular presenter continued to explain that it’s all a matter of logistics and balancing each other’s schedules.

One of the other panellists taking part in the segment rebutted: “Well that’s logistics, you’ve got an odd job that makes you get up early. You have to! But I do think if you can sleep together why not.” 

The star’s husband Patrick Kielty had also been managing a hectic schedule.

The 53-year-old had been flying over and back from London to Dublin, so he could host the Late Late Show on RTE every Friday night. His show has now finished for the summer.
