According to the NHS, common physical symptoms of menopause and perimenopause include difficulty sleeping, muscle aches and joint pains.

Difficult sleeping may be a result of night sweats and can make you feel tired and irritable during the day.

Women typically also experience hot flushes in the face, neck and chest at night, disrupting sleep even further.

Luckily, many have backed two £4.99 products available in Home Bargains to ease these physical symptoms.

The BetterYou Magnesium Oil Body Spray and Magnesium Oil Body Spray are both available in the discounted retailer.

They’re still full-price at £13.95 elsewhere, meaning women are racing to nab the sprays for almost £10 cheaper.

According to the scientists at BetterYou, “magnesium is responsible for 325 chemical reactions inside the body”.

“It helps support calcium absorption, maintenance of normal bones and teeth, normal psychological function and healthy functioning of the nervous system,” they said.

“Magnesium also helps improve rest and recovery by contributing to a reduction in tiredness and fatigue, electrolyte balance and supports normal energy-yielding metabolism.”

Jem Badrudin took to Facebook group Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK to alert others that the sprays are just £4.99 in Home Bargains.

“Anyone suffering with general joint pain, perimenopause and menopause, this may help,” she penned.

Women ran to the comments to dub the products “life savers”, revealing they often pay full-price for them elsewhere.

The BetterYou Magnesium Joint Body Spray is formulated to relieve muscle stiffness and improve joint flexibility, while the Magnesium Oil Body Spray is designed to promote natural relaxation.

According to BetterYou founder Andrew Thomas, magnesium is best supplemented transdermally – which means through the skin – rather than through tablets or capsules.

“Concentrate on areas of stiffness – muscles and joints,” he said.

“But try to avoid areas of thinner skin, like the neck.

“Magnesium oil is best applied directly after a shower when the pores are open and the skin is wet.

“After a minute or so, all the magnesium will have been absorbed.”

What is the menopause and what age does it usually start?

Menopause is a natural part of ageing, which usually happens when a woman is between the age of 45 and 55.

In the UK, the average age for a woman to go through menopause is 51.

It occurs when oestrogen levels in the body start to decline.

During this time periods become less frequent or they can suddenly stop, and after menopause occurs women will be unable to become pregnant naturally.

Around one in 100 women experience menopause before the age of 40, and this is known as premature ovarian insufficiency or premature menopause.

Many celebrities have spoken out about their own experiences, including Lisa Snowdon, Davina McCall, Michelle Heaton and Zoe Hardman.

What are the symptoms?

Menopausal symptoms can start months or years before your periods stop, and can last until four years or longer after your last period.

Symptoms include:

  • Hot flushes
  • Changing or irregular periods
  • Difficulty in sleeping
  • Anxiety and loss of confidence
  • Low mood, irritability and depression
  • Night sweats
  • Vaginal dryness or discomfort during sex
  • Reduced libido (sex drive)
  • Problems with concentration or memory
  • Weight gain
  • Bladder control
